Sanctification of Nepali Congress

Current Nepali Congress Mahasamiti conclave offers more challenges to its top leadership. Hundreds of distrustful yet dedicated leaders and cadres of all units are shooting out a range of nasty questions to their supreme body. And the leaders at the apex have seer dearth of valid answers to quench the urgent thirst of inquisitive mass.

Every speech maker in the meeting seems to be lacking ingenious opinions because they are borrowing lines after lines from the works of late NC leader B P Koirala. The present predicament of NC may not offer them politically right terms that can carry renewed thoughts of the contexts.

Major chunk of NC leadership members has already participated in governments in different occasions—NC itself is the single party that has ruled country the longest in post-1990 era. They are proficient in manipulating real national queries into a throwaway political chat. They have, thus, gathered sludges of ill-governance and apathy.

In contrast, the humble lines of BP do not look comfortable to the mouths of the eloquent fellow Congress leaders for the adversaries they have catered on sabotaging the image of Nepali Congress and BP thought.

However, enriched with his political vision, NC stands as an alternative force in the country that has been participating for governing the state since 1990s. It has contributed many visionaries who drafted the laws of the land. They also guided the course of the national history into the road to prosperity.
Nepali Congress Party stands in a juncture where it has to decide either to fall back on regressive path of Hindutva and become Nepali version of BJP in order to surrogate by-gone era ceremonial monarchy or continue secularism and enhance multiculturalism along with other progressive forces for future Nepal.
Additionally, some of them have still been striving against any form of extremism, fascism and undemocratic moves of the government.  One of the custodians of Nepali Congress norms and values, GP Koirala had worked tirelessly to promote peace across the country. He toiled to accommodate all the political parties with diverse socio-political agendas in order to cope with the test of time.

He had successfully negotiated peace through his robust humility for driving out despot from the throne.  He knew how to move deep into opposition’s line for recruiting all under the singular national agenda.

After him, any Congress leaders who poised themselves to head the party either fermented factionalism throwing entire organization into the ditch or supplied worst leadership that hardly paid heed to what grade emotion and devotion the cadres on the base possess.

Especially, present NC is clearly vivisected into two factions: Deuba and Poudel groups. These two leaders at the top are at loggerheads on myriads of intra-party issues including size and individuals of the organization.  Ever since Deuba became the party president, the core concerns of the inner circle members of the party are disgruntled due to the cases related to its sister fronts.

The leaders have opposite stands regarding the party operation strategies and formulating ground tactics for fighting against the differing views of the opposite parties in institutionalizing the newly promulgated constitution of the country.
Sanctifying the party itself through eradication of factionalism, regionalism, gender biases, and ineffective methods of party operation is a must.

Amid cockfight of the leaders, the underdogs are the cadres. They have gradually lost their patience and pertinence over party superiors.  They are in need of immediate galvanization of the values the sincere party leaders protected from the adversary--either from far-right or ultra-left in history.

The cadres were vanguards who shield party against any potential damage that would pollute the party image among the supporters.  The people who love freedom, liberalism, privatization, free market and competitive society have strong and undeviated hope from it too.

Devoid of any crucial socio-political pro-public agenda, Nepali Congress has now become institutionally corrupt, physically shrunken and culturally decadent in history. It lacks proper ideological ground. It has also lost strength of national sentiment of social harmony among diverse people.  The very absence of people’s sympathy drove NC to suffer the disgraceful loss in the last general elections.

Instead of exploring flaws and reasons of loss of such degree, the leadership is brawling, in fact, for baseless anxieties. The entire leadership team looks apathetic to the pathetic conditions of the party on the ground. It needs instantaneous refinement for readying it to the next electoral battles against boastful left alliance.

NC is a historically significant political entity in Nepal. It fought for democracy and the Rana regime. It instilled the liberal political environment for the first time in the country. Suvarna Shamsher JBR, Matrika Prasad Koirala, BP Koirala, Ganeshman Singh,  Krishna Prasad Bhattarai aka Kishunjee, GP Koirala and other major  wardens of Nepali Congress had successfully upheld freedom and justice for the people by stirring democratic norms. At times, their efforts were highly endorsed by the harshest critics of the opposite parties.

NC, in proper sense, had become synonymous to the liberal but social democracy. The current NC leaders must, therefore, respect the hard-earned historical legacy of the past leadership and craft out the new visions based on them.

Furthermore, it must encourage already slacken youths for they are the future not just for NC but for the nation too. The current national crises have to be interpreted seriously by them so that not only the pro-Congress mass but the people in general can foster their faith into their heart on behalf of it.

Sanctifying the party itself through eradication of factionalism, regionalism, gender biases, and ineffective methods of party operation is a must.

Having said that it can be recommended that the urgent action of current NC Mahasamiti meeting must concentrate on sanctifying the party itself through eradication of factionalism, regionalism, gender biases, and ineffective methods of party operation. If it does like so, it will be the only political institution that will win confidence of the voters and achieve overwhelming victory.

However, the existing leadership wrestling for establishing factional agenda does not look able enough to draft a united charter for uniting already fragmented party and bitterly battered cadres.
